New Logo for Occupy

A Jonathan Barnbrook-designed identity has been chosen as the new logo for the Occupy London movement, after winning out in a public vote
The new identity, which has been created pro bono, will now be used by the movement on its website and social media communications, and will also be available for use on flyers, badges and other collateral. It can be downloaded for use here.

Occupy London spokesman Spyro van Leemnen says the identity will also be used for Occupy Everywhere protests planned for 15 December. Van Leemnen says that although the logo is available for use, Occupy protesters are free to use their own designs as well. ‘We are an open movement’, he says.

Occupy London had previously been using an identity based on the Transport for London roundel, but last month TfL’s lawyers ordered them to stop using this.

The movement then launched an open competition to find a new identity, which would be chosen by a public vote.

A total of 18 logos were shortlisted and put anonymously to the public vote. Van Leemnen says he approached Barnbrook to take part in the competition, as his Bastard font had already been used in the movement’s newspaper - the Occupied Times of London.

"The Theatre of Protest" Occupy Wall St.

So many reporters and photographers recording personal opinions,feelings of dissatisfaction with society,capitalism,politics.Don't feel this is really getting the kind of coverage it deserves.

From the Guardian

Protests inspired by the Occupy Wall Street movement in New York and the "Indignants" in Spain have spread to cities around the world. Tens of thousands went on the march in New York, London, Frankfurt, Madrid, Rome, Sydney and Hong Kong as organisers aimed to "initiate global change" against capitalism and austerity measures. There were extraordinary scenes in New York where at least 10,000 protesters took their message from the outpost of Zuccotti Park into the heart of the city, thronging into Times Square.

New York sunday ,it has to be the Hi Line and then the galleries,not hugely impressed by much of what we saw ,we breezed in and out grading each show from A to E .I saw alot of D- sadly.

Then Nick Cave's show and what a joy .Overwhelming , pattern and texture,like a frozen moment in an exuberant tribal/alien performance,a world fizzing with colour.

Nick Cave, an African American, was born in Missouri in 1959. He is a sculptor, dancer and performance artist, who trained under the tutelage of Alvin Ailey. Now in Chicago, Cave was the one-time director of the graduate Fashion program at School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

"For Now , on view at Mary Boone Gallery, is like a West Indian Carnival, a riot of color, Mardi Gras in a box. It is aptly described as an open playground. You literally walk into a frozen frame of Soundsuits caught in the act of freely interacting, without rules. It is a celebratory release of color, chaos, and exuberance. These circus acts and volatile vignettes are candy for the eyes and the mind."

Weekend in Paris

Paris does not disappoint ! Photo taken on drizzly day ends up like a tinted vintage postcard,no photoshopping at all!
Stayed at the lovely Le Citizen Hotel du Canal.An independent hotel with a passion for detail, design and people.The very charming Sophie and her attentive team are relaxed ,welcoming and helpful.
Breakfast is lovely and includes homemade cakes and confitures ,the rhubarb jam especially good and being surrounded by interesting arty books makes one want to linger even longer with another cafe creme

Right on the Canal St Martin,a very cool quartier,the only problem is working out where to go for diner in the neighbourhood and making sure you book as they all seem to be very inviting and are all packed by 8.30

Hotel du Nord,

is just up the road from the hotel.It's both hotel and restaurant.

Tasty grub,lively, loads of atmosphere ,good lighting and quirky decor,very buzzy ,photo taken in afternoon when wisely booking table for evening.

Finally Le Comptoir General,like some

guerilla,pop up bar in downtown Jamaica, part museum,part seedy dive,part schoolroom but thrilling in its randomness with a twist.Again,photo taken in afternoon before the crowd descended.

Spent an amazing day at Burlingham Hall last week doing one day of a two day workshop.It was wonderful,like alchemy,carrageen,gouache ,ox gall ,water and an inspiring teacher ,the first steps to a different kind of pattern making and an understanding that the nuances are mind boggling and the potential for failure high,but practice makes perfect...eventually.I imagine.

Jumped on the train to Cambridge to see John Cage Exhibition at Kettle's Yard.
John Cage was one of the leading avant-garde composers of the twentieth century, most famous perhaps for his silent work of 1952, 4'33". Cage was closely connected with art and artists throughout his long career. He collaborated frequently with Robert Rauschenberg and the dance choregrapher Merce Cunningham, was a friend of Jasper Johns and Marcel Duchamp, and was a major influence on the Fluxus artists of the 1960s and 70s. It was not until he was in his mid-sixties that he began to practice seriously as a visual artist himself, producing over 600 prints with the Crown Point Press in San Francisco, as well as 260 drawings and watercolours. In these works he applied the same chance-determined procedures that he used in his musical compositions.
The work is quite liberating and spare,with a strong link to chinese and japanese art through his use of papers and the fluid and calligraphic brush strokes that he uses.

This is the first exhibition in England of photographs of 19th century China taken by the legendary Scottish photographer

and travel writer John Thomson (1837-1921).Unlike most photographers working in the Far East at that time, Thomson was not a government official, nor a missionary. He was a professional photographer who was fascinated by China. Thomson possessed an open mind and was sensitive to the lives and surroundings of his subjects. He was able to capture people and street life in a most natural way. His photographs therefore form a unique archive documenting 19th century China's landscapes, architecture, people and customs.

The fair will take place in the beautiful hall , St Augustine’s, (just next door to the Selvedge shop). It's a lovely, old-fashioned space with wooden beams and a stage area where tea will be served.

Read these amazingly evocative quotes over breakfast this morning from the brilliant John Carey:

Pakistani born Huma Mulji’s works explore ideas of displacement. Her preoccupation with cultural difference takes her away from India and Pakistan toward the Middle East and other landscapes.In Arabian Delight a taxidermied camel is forced into a battered suitcase, addressing ideas of the relocation of cultures. The rather crazed manner in which the collapsed camel is impossibly forced into the case, legs thrown in disarray, is a humorous comment on the perceived ‘Arabisation’ of Pakistan as another Muslim state.

Just discovered that the V & A are putting on a major exhibition of Quilts 1700-2010 in June.

It will be its first ever exhibition of British quilts, with examples dating from 1700 to the present day - a unique opportunity to view the V& A's unseen quilt collection as well as key national loans. Earliest examples include a sumptuous silk and velvet bedcover, with an oral narrative that links it to King Charles II's visit to an Exeter manor house in the late 17th century. Recent examples will include works by leading artists such as Grayson Perry and Tracey Emin and commissions for the exhibition by a number of contemporary artists including Sue Stockwell and Caren Garfen.

Effortlessly slipping between Shanghai’s glamorous past and its affluent present, the characters that drift through many of Yang’s works are nothing if not fashionable — unknowable, indifferent, and always gorgeous. Now Prada has tapped Yang to create a new film as part of their Spring/Summer 2010 menswear campaign. Titled First Spring, the 9-minute, black-and-white work features Prada-clad models floating — with the help of black umbrellas — through the skies of 1930s or ’40s-era Shanghai, while members of Imperial Court traverse the streets below. Inspired by Nature.Went last night to a Talk at the V and A which was actally a little disappointing although individually the speakers were interesting particularly Anna Pavord who painted the most incredible landscapes with words,she evoked the magic of highland waterfalls and one could almost hear them as well as see them ,what a gift that is.The problem was they were all doing there own thing and did not specifically talk about being inspired by nature ,which was meant to be the theme of the talk.Celia Birtwell was asked questions about her work but it was just a succession of images of her prints ,where she repeated what was written on the image the name of the print and date,very dull.Was pleased that i went I love to here people talking about what they are passionate about.But as an event ,it could have been better,not surprised that there was only one question at the end and that wasn't really a question more of a statement.Still looking forward to visiting Kew Gardens when I have the time.http://www.blogger.com/www.vam.ac.uk

Allowing myself a few hours off after a very busy and very successful 4 days showing my new print collection at Tent London.It was a really interesting show with such passionate people showing their talents,from digital pieces that i am always drawn to ,to more unexpexted things like purple floor mops that resemble little dogs,I love those too.And all those interesting conversations and projects and dreams floating about.I will over the next week post some more images but this is todays offering.This on the right is part of my tower of pattern.Vintage cases that I have covered in some of the new collection.The Bunny scrapbook and Watermeadow 2 which will be available online at the end of October.

Sunday morning,had a little wander round Brick Lane,which was great,so long since I'd been there.Couldn't resist a photo of this very classy mobile coffee shop...

I've just discovered that The lovely Barbara Chandler will be showing a selection of Polish landscapes at Tent,oh we are so spoilt with all this creativity going on this month barbarachandler.co.uk.

Wondering once again what everyday folk do,those who are not involved in creative pursuits,what are weekends for? I hear they go to the beach or to walk in the lovely grounds of Blickling Hall,perhaps have lunch at Desmond MacCarthy's great cafe near Holt,that'll be in Norfolk www.wivetonhall.co.uk/cafe.

A gem of a place,Fabulous home cooking with Home grown pork,chicken,veggies and amazing summer berries,all seasonal in unique setting of the fruit farm,with a distant view of the sea.

I didn't get there at all this summer.Thats not good enough.

Interesting event at Geffrye museum yesterday.what a little gem that place is with a really excellent selection of books.Today getting ready for big day.Photo shoot for a feature in Easy Living which will hopefully be good for Original Little bird,then rushing straight to the airport ,catch a plane to Berlin to see the incredible Bauhaus Exhibition before it closes,then a little rummaging in what I hear are great flea markets,will squeeze in a couple of other interesting places and eat well i hope.Will post photos,forecast is for rain,but I have my fingers crossed.

Well I made it.Welcome to my World of Pattern.I am pretty busy at the moment,getting things ready for my stand at Tent London.Today I have been editing photos that I took at a friends house.She has created the perfect home,full of all kinds of interesting and decorative object,paintings and furniture,She has a brilliant shop in Norwich called the Bell Jar,on Upper St .Giles.I have also just finished covering a very old suitcase ,which will be part of an installation on my stand.A tower of pattern....
